Summer Reading

Find all the info you need for Summer Reading here!

The Summer Reading program is designed to encourage children to keep reading during summer vacation. Preventing the “summer slide” continues to be the main objective of summer reading programs. For many families with elementary-aged children, the public library is the only community space available during the summer months where they can access free educational and cultural enrichment activities and programs. For many teen readers, the library is the only space offering free access to age-appropriate programs, resources, and expertise in their community. For many pre-readers and their families, the library is the only space offering free access to age-appropriate programs, resources, and expertise in their community. The need for these offerings is present all year; therefore, it is vital for your library to include the youngest children—starting with newborns—in your summer reading program

  • Children are motivated to read.
  • Children develop positive attitudes about reading, books, and the library
  • Children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation..
  • Having high levels of literacy are needed for higher education and future employment.
  • Young children will gain self-confidence and a love for reading, books, and the library
  • Most standardized tests that teenagers will take include a reading comprehension portion.
  • The library may become a community destination for more families during the summer.
